In Ghana, the stool is a symbol of the nation’s culture. Most homes would have at least one, if not several. Large and decorative ones would be used by older members of the family and can have pride of place in the living room. In the kitchen, you can find smaller, everyday-use ones.
Some believe it symbolises cultural enrichment, authority and stability. In some parts of the country a female version is presented to the bride’s family as a symbol of stability, a demonstration the woman is firmly accepted into her new family.
In the Ashanti culture where this pendant was made the stool is a symbol of the traditional ruler’s (chief) authority.
